Dry suits
Semi-dry suits
Semi-dry suits are basically wet suits with the addition of seals at the wrists and ankles to help stop water flush through or form a labyrinth with gloves or boots to stop water ingress, thereby keeping you warmer.
Dry suits
Dry suits come in a variety of materials: tri-laminate, foam neoprene, chrushed or compressed neoprene, cordura, rubber etc.
They have seals at the neck and wrists, and sometimes at the ankles (though these days most have built in boots), and can have a variety of dry zips in different configurations.
When worn with correct under-suits for warmth, dry suits can be used in the coldest water temperatures.
Notes on diving suits
One type of suit will not necessarily be appropriate for all types of diving.
Wet suits allow water in at whatever temperature it is at, then it is warmed by your body. Provide the suit is a good fit, you will stay warm. As the suits get thicker they become less flexible, but provide better insulation and more warmth.
Dry suits will keep you completely dry!! When worn with the correct under suits they will also keep you warm, but because they require inflation to prevent squeeze, proper training is needed for their safe use.
It is very important that all wet, dry or semi-dry suits fit correctly, suits from different manufacturers fit a wide variety of body shapes.
